What is the salary of BPS-17 in Pakistan? BPS-17 Salary Structure

The government of Pakistan has introduced a framework for distributing salaries among government employees. This system is known as the Basic Pay Scale (BPS), and the levels of this BPS system range from BPS-01 to BPS-22. There are a total of 22 levels where candidates are selected for roles from clerical staff to high-ranking officials. The Basic Pay Scale (BPS) is a cornerstone that keeps uniformity and remuneration for millions of workers currently working in the government sector. Each category has different minimum and maximum basic pay. It also contains annual increments, like if your basic pay is starting from 50k per month, you will also be able to get around 4k extra per year.

Beyond this, as employees gain experience, their stipend is increased from time to time and they also receive allowances, including House Rent Allowance (HRA), Medical Allowance, and many other offers that boost the income of government officials.  There are 22 stages in this category, each level has its own salary and offers, but in this blog, we are focused on the specification of BPS-17. BPS-17 contains roles such as administrative officers, medical officers, and assistant professors, etc.

BPS-17: An Overview

BPS-17 is the grade of the Basic Pay Scale (BPS) in Pakistan. it is often the entry point for professionals such as doctors, educators, engineers, or administrators with advanced qualifications. The BPS-17 is attractive and, due to its allowances and increments, it is competitive, which reflects the demand for professional roles. Employees in this grade typically with specialized skills and leadership responsibilities, such as

  • Assistant Professors in universities or colleges.
  • Medical Officers in government hospitals.
  • Assistant Directors in federal or provincial departments.
  • Section Officers in secretariats.
  • Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) in law enforcement.

The BPS-17 salary comprises two components: Basic Pay and Allowances. Basic Pay means the salary the employee gets without any added allowances, and the 2nd component allowances mean House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Medical Allowances, etc. The total salary of the employee varies and depends on the department, location, experience, and years of service.

The basic pay BPS-17

The BPS-17 is one of the levels of the Basic Pay Scale. Each level in BPS has its own specifications, and BPS-17 comes with different services. According to the BPS-17, the minimum pay for the employee is Rs. 50,370 per month. Maximum pay for the employee in the BPS-17 is Rs. 95,510 per month with annual increments. The annual increments depend upon the status of the employee; every year, the salary of the employee has the increase of Rs. 3,230. This increment is the extra amount the employee of the BPS-17 receives per month. The increment in the salary is expected for the 15 months; BPS-17 is divided into 15 stages, meaning the employee can get the increment of the specified amount for the 15 years since the service started.

For example, an employee starting in 2026 will be paid Rs. 50,370 per month, which is the basic salary. But after one year in 2027, the amount of Rs. 3,230 will be increased in the salary, then the salary the employee will get per month will become 53,600. And then further, it will keep incrementing in the span of a year, like in 2028, the amount of Rs 3,230 will be incremented again, then the salary will become 56,830. The annual increment will continue until the salary reaches the maximum pay of Rs. 95,510 and completes the number of stages in 15 years.

Adhoc Relief Allowance

However, with this, the Adhoc Relief Allowance has been introduced for BPS-17 employees. For BPS-17, the 22% of the salary is added as Adhoc Relief Allowance. For example, the basic pay of a new employee is Rs. 50,370, and the 22% of the basic pay is Rs. 11.081 that’s mean with Adhoc Relief Allowance, the employee will get extra Rs. 11,081 and the total salary per month will become Rs. 61,451. This was an estimate for the employee with a basic salary. Let’s now estimate the senior’s employee’s pay, the maximum basic pay of senior employee is Rs. 95,510 and the addition of 22% of basic salary due to Adhoc Relief Allowance then the salary will become Rs. 116,522 per month because the 22% of basic pay of Rs. 95,510 is Rs. 21,012 and then the basic maximum pay of senior employee will be Rs. 116,522 per month.
